<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 107%; margin: 0px;">Ellen Gable, the award-winning Catholic author of eight books, has embarked on a new series that mothers will be happy to share with their daughters. In the first installment, Julia’s Gifts, we meet Julia just before Christmas 1917 in Philadelphia, during World War I. She is shopping for a Christmas present for her beloved, and praying for his safety. The reader soon finds that she has not yet met her ‘beloved’. She will be turning 21 soon, and she is hopeful that she will meet her future husband in the upcoming year.

<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 107%; margin: 0px;">In March 1918, Julia’s friend encourages her to join the Red Cross, and they begin their service as nurses in France. Untrained, the innocent and naïve Julia is thrown into a world replete with the challenges of lice, flu, pain, sorrow, and blood. She not quite gotten her feet wet when she is told to prepare a German officer for interrogation by Major Peter Winslow, a Canadian who has become bitter and angry after receiving news of a personal tragedy.

<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 107%; margin: 0px;">At this point, the reader may think the story will unfold in a predictable way. However, in the messy world of war, nothing happens in exactly the way we think – or hope – it will. The characters cope with their fears and anxieties while reshaping their perceptions of themselves, others, the world, and God. Where does love fit into the picture – if it all? Gable’s story explores that phase of young adulthood that is often defined by an initial disillusionment when confronted with reality. With faith and the grace of God, this stage can result in a blossoming and rediscovery of one’s true self and purpose.

<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 107%; margin: 0px;">Gable’s books are written in line with the Theology of the Body. She purposely wrote this book so that there are no sexual themes that might be deemed inappropriate for young adolescents. This book presents an opportunity for mothers and daughters to talk about how to prepare for future marriage. There are themes of war, including pestilence, severe injuries, illness, dying, and one suicide, but these are tempered by Gable’s gentle writing style.
Those were some shoes to fill. "The Passion" packed theaters around the globe despite being in two ancient languages and had a mystical quality about it that made it more than a movie, it drew you in, to an encounter with Jesus. You were not a bystander, but a spiritual participant, so much so, that I was drawn to see it many times in Lent of 2004 and it has never left me. Could another film about Christ even come close?
Not until now. "Risen" was described as a murder mystery and, in the beginning, its a fascinating look at the chaos surrounding the Crucifixion of Christ: the terror of the disciples fearful of persecution, the frustration of the Roman's at the Jew who would not stay dead, and the envious conniving of the Sanhedrin to keep the Resurrection quiet. Then Clavius, the war-weary Roman Tribune sees something mystical in the followers of Christ, and little by little, seeks more than just the body of Jesus.
That's when "Risen" began to resemble "The Passion" for more than the opening credits and music which were clearly inspired by it. Its gritty portrayal of the brutality of Roman rule, juxtaposed with the peace and love of Christ, and the affect which He had on those who knew Him, drew me in and kept me transfixed. Clavius became Everyman who seeks Christ even though he isn't sure what he will find.
"Risen" made it hard to leave the theater, and kept my daughter and me talking all the way home about the film, planning to experience it again, just as we did with "The Passion." It made me stay up past midnight to share this extraordinary experience which will transform your Easter into an encounter with the living Christ in history. Go to see it and be transported back to the terrifying days of Christ's death and resurrection, walk the unsure steps of the apostles, and have your heart moved by a very human yet majestic Jesus.
Nothing short of a stunning performance by Joseph Fiennes as Clavius, I would say Oscar worthy, but I know better. This film will receive its accolades from its audience, its rising fast in popularity and will become an Easter classic, a beloved part of Christian family tradition to be viewed every year after "The Passion".
Violence is too graphic for children, but there is no objectionable content, the film is 100% loyal to Scripture and Cliff Curtis is a worthy Jesus. You owe to yourself to see "Risen."Leticiahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08170455690163831806noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1874284971533997218.post-45963239807988017722015-05-01T15:54:00.002-04:002015-05-01T15:56:00.184-04:00Ally-Saurus and the First Day of School: an interview with Richard Torrey

The phone rang. “Hello,” said Richard Torrey, whom I only knew as the author-illustrator of the incredibly clever book I had just received and enjoyed with my eight-year-old daughter. I had no notes prepared for my telephone interview, and as it turned out, this seemed to suit Mr. Torrey’s style just fine.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 17.1200008392334px;">

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 17.1200008392334px;">“My daughter and I loved Ally-saurus,” I told Torrey, “We think it is just perfect for a child who is headed for their first day of school.”

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 17.1200008392334px;">

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 17.1200008392334px;">“Well,” he replied, “these are trying times…” He explained that the first day of anything, whether it was the first day of school or the first day of camp, was tough for a kid. “You can equate it to that feeling of walking the plank…it’s like entering another universe.”

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 17.1200008392334px;">

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 17.1200008392334px;">Ally-saurus is the preferred moniker of a little girl who is just waking up for her first day of school. She and her surroundings are illustrated in dark grey pencil, while her stuffed dinosaurs are lightly colored in pastel, and a dinosaur’s spikes and tail are drawn onto her head and back in pink crayon. Ally-saurus starts off appearing confident, although it soon becomes apparent that she is different from the other kids. By the middle of the book, the other students can be seen wearing their imagined armor of princesses, an astronaut, a lion, a pirate, a butterfly, and a dragon. Embracing their differences, by the end of the day the children are getting along splendidly, and the next day Ally jumps out of bed, excited for her next day’s adventures.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 17.1200008392334px;">

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 17.1200008392334px;">The idea of Ally originated with his son, who was always the tiniest in his class or sports team. When he was four years old, he stated that he was a giant dog, “and he was very serious”, said Torrey. That imagined appearance was “like armor…it helped him to get through being the smallest”. <span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 17.1200008392334px;">Torrey started to experiment with ways to draw a child’s imagination without using words. The character of Ally started as a penciled doodle in Torrey’s “idea book”, with a dinosaur’s tail drawn in crayon to demonstrate the notion that she thought she was a dinosaur.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 17.1200008392334px;">

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 17.1200008392334px;">I asked Torrey about how he got started in his career as an author-illustrator. He describes his journey as a “series of happy accidents”. Born in Los Angeles, he originally went to Alleghany College as a pre-med major, which he switched to psychology; he has lived on Long Island ever since he graduated. Richard’s father was the Hockey Hall-of-Famer, Bill Torrey, who managed the Islanders during the years they built the team that would win the Stanley Cup. “Those were very good times…Islander fans are special…it’s an era that is ending,” said Richard. He is very sad to see the Islanders leaving Long Island. “Long Island kids won’t have a home team.”

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 17.1200008392334px;">

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 17.1200008392334px;">Richard never took art classes, but he loved cartooning. For his fourth birthday, his great-grandparents gave him the book The Story of Ferdinand, by Munro Leaf. Robert Lawson’s ink drawings of Ferdinand were the early seeds of his career. He always loved the Peanuts cartoon strip in particular, and part of his inspiration comes from Charles M. Schultz. When he was still in grade school, Richard met Schultz at an Oakland Seals hockey game. Richard decided to show his drawing of a horse to Schultz, who then drew Snoopy on the back of the picture – Richard still has it.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 17.1200008392334px;">

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 17.1200008392334px;">Torrey worked for the Islanders after college, while constantly drawing in his spare time. When a syndicated cartoonist saw his work, he got what some might call a “lucky break”, although for many years he had to work harder to sell his ideas because of his lack of professional experience. He was learning to be an illustrator as well as a writer while creating Hartland and PETE AND CLETE. At one point he reached a cross-roads as newspapers started to evolve, and editors could not decide whether to put his strip in the comics or sports section. He went to work for Recycled Paper Greetings, where he still does work. He also did freelance magazine illustrations, until he was discovered by an agent who was looking for drawings for a sample book.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 17.1200008392334px;">

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 17.1200008392334px;">After illustrating other authors’ books for a few years, he decided to write his own. His first dozen or so ideas failed to sell, and his agent advised him to “write what you know”. This naturally brought him to his own world, parenting young children who played sports, and his first books were born. When asked what he would advise young writers/illustrators, Torrey said, “Somebody’s gonna do it, so why not you”…”you have to have skin like a rhinoceros”, but if you love it and believe in your talent, there is no reason to believe that you cannot do what you want to do with that gift. He quoted Richard Bach, who once said, “A professional writer is an amateur who didn't quit”.

Odd Thomas doesn't believe in over-preparing, because life throws the strangest things at him all the time. He has to trust that he will know what to do when the moment calls for it. In an interview with ETWN, Koontz says that by the end of the eighth book, Saint Odd, the character will have achieved a state of perfect humility.

My family and I have always loved Forrest Gump (with selective editing!) When I tried to figure out why, it always came down to this story line; an innocent man teaches the cynics who surround him in his life how to believe in goodness and love wholeheartedly with amazing results. The movie “Little Boy” has the same appealing plot line; a diminutive yet courageous little boy faces down the great evil of World War II in an effort to bring his father home.

Pepper Flynt Busbee (Jakob Salvati) is the smallest kid in his small town of O’Hare on the Pacific Ocean; bullied by the boys his age, and pushed around by his big brother. But his daddy taught him courage and Pepper is determined to overcome evil through his great faith (which at first he has confused with magic powers). He is inspired when his parish priest preaches about faith the size of a mustard seed which can move mountains and, after a false start where his brother encourages him to attack the home of a Japanese man (Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa as Hashimoto), his mother brings him to church for confession and some guidance. The gentle paternal relationship of Pepper and Father Oliver (Tom Wilkinson) is something we have not seen from Hollywood in decades. Father uses the Corporal Works of Mercy as a guide to increase Pepper’s faith and teaches him to overcome his racism against Mr. Hashimoto. Pepper’s determination to follow Father’s guidelines inspires his entire town to examine their behavior and believe in faith.

Little Boy is pure cinematic magic, there is nostalgia, wonder, laughter, and of course, tears. I heard people crying on both sides of me and minutes later they burst out in applause as the credits rolled. I attended a preview where an entire multiplex in Boston was filled to overflowing with enrapt filmgoers of all ages. The passionate acting of Jakob Salvati kept even the little boys riveted while the clever laughs kept the film from being pedantic.

This is a film for all ages, where the entire family will be talking about the various themes afterward. No offensive language though a couple of fight and battle scenes along with real war footage make this for older children and up. I dare say Forrest Gump may have met his match in “Little Boy”.
and athletes. Often, we know more than we want to know about their lifestyles and relationships.
How this type of bad example influences us and our children is well known, yet
most of us feel helpless to counteract it. It takes concentrated effort to find good
examples to follow, especially if you are attempting to be a good Catholic. Good Catholics rarely
make headlines these days. Here is a book which attempts to make edifying examples
of holy Catholic lives easier to find.

Catholics think that today’s saints-in-the-making are humorless old
fogeys dressed in grey who never step outside of
church. By compiling stories of ordinary Catholics leading extraordinary
lives
of irresistible joy, Randy Hain, the creator of the website, The
Integrated Catholic Life, has done Catholics a great service. He dispels
that stereotype by relating
thirteen stories about irresistibly joyful Catholic people whom he has
met in his daily life, with a

the helpful series of questions at the end of each chapter as a tool to
challenge myself to conform my own actions and attitudes to that
person’s example. Hain makes sure to emphasize the useful advice from
each of his story
subjects. Advice such as “Receive the Eucharist daily," "be humble," "
we must
support and pray for our priests," "we must properly catechize
ourselves,” are
highlighted in bold print and leave no doubt as to why he chose these
people as
examples to help us in our own walk of faith. Each chapter is headed by
a Scripture verse or a paragraph from the Catechism of the Catholic
Church
which epitomizes that person's life. The people whose stories grace this

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 14.0pt; line-height: 115%;">Living in the highly secular Northeast, I enjoyed the
example of Andy LaVallee, a successful bread distributor in Boston.
After a life confession and re dedication of his life to Our Lady while on pilgrimage with Jim Caviezel, Andy began to
learn and apply Catholic social teaching to his employees with amazing results.
He was inspired by reading of Pope Emeritus Benedict's encyclical, Charity in Truth. Andy
says, "The Holy Father was asking us to seek hybrid programs that could
develop and help people and business enterprises. This encyclical
provided the motivation for my company to transform our biggest
department, our distribution program, into something more devout." He
changed the title of the job from "driver" to "guardian" and gave the
employees who dealt directly with the customers a bigger responsibility,
teaching them the concept of servant leadership, encouraging to grow
their routes by giving them a share in the new business they created. It
lead to increased profits both for the drivers who felt more invested
in their work and the company. Another time, after prayer and
reflection, Andy rehired an employee whom he fired for insubordination.
Andy accompanied this unprecedented action with a memo on forgiveness so
that, "my entire company would understand the power of this virtue."
Andy's attendance at daily Mass, weekly confession and adoration is the
power behind his unique brand of leadership. He shares his story with
other business leaders and also with fellow Catholics.
<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 14.0pt; line-height: 115%;">Joyful Witness
would make an excellent book for a study group for Catholics who want
to support one another as they grow in faith or for RCIA groups who want
to give practical examples to new Catholics of what living a fully
Catholic life really means. Blessed Mother Teresa gave away the secret
of her success when she said, "Joy is a net with which to catch souls." I
give Joyful Witness an enthusiastic thumbs up!

This CNN series focus on six artifacts from the life and time of Jesus, including the Shroud of Turin, pieces of the True Cross, bones of John the Baptist, a burial box with Jesus' name, and a papyrus 'gospel' that mentions His 'wife'. I must include the fact that Jesus did NOT have a wife, so I wouldn't give any credence to that 'gospel at all. This episode focuses on the Shroud of Turin.

I was glad to have the opportunity for this review, because I am an affficianado of relics such as the Shroud, the Cross, etc. One of my favorite books is 'Relics' by Joan Cruz. And I do believe the Shroud was the burial cloth of Jesus.

I very much enjoyed the combination of re-enactment of Gospel events and documentary, parts of which are in the Holy Land.

One point on which I differ with CNN is that I don't look at these artifacts as proving the existence of Jesus, I believe in Him by virtue of the Gospel and His Resurrection, not because of artifacts.

Although there are points on which I differ, I found Finding Jesus well done and reverent. I look forward to the next episodes.

This is a retelling of the story of Noah's Ark, which most of us have already heard or read. But... this version of it has a pretty cool ark :)...it has a little train that runs from end to end, a gym, a sauna, etc. But despite the amenities, there a couple of veggies grumbling about being confined, especially Noah's son, Shem, who is newly married and wants to build a home.

Shem goes so far as to come up with a 'plan B', but in the end the veggies and the animals learn the most important lesson, to trust in God, and his plan.

To be honest, I enjoyed the story more than I thought I would.

The Kingsman is a British secret service organization. The first part of the movie focuses on recruiting a new agent, and the six young people who are being evaluated for the position. The two finalists are Eggsy and Roxy. (Taron Egerton and Sophie Cookson). Taron is a natural as Eggsy. He is perfect for the role.

The plot of Kingsman is somewhat non-sensical, but take it for what it is...just entertainment. Valentine (Samuel Jackson) is trying to control the world, and the Kingsman must stop him.

I am not a fan of Samuel Jackson, but I have to admit I am impressed by his versatility as an actor. The last few roles I've seen him in were quite diverse, and his role as Valentine in Kingsman is pretty unique and entertaining.

What bothered me is the frequent and gratuitous use of the F word....like it's part of a common vocabulary. I found it disturbing and unnecessary.

In addition to language, content warnings include violence and some gore.

Overall, the action was entertaining and the gadgets are pretty cool.

The R rating is appropriate....adults may find it entertaining, but it's not for kids.
Now on DVD

This is the story of Travis Freeman. Travis is a promising high school football player who wakes up with a swollen eye, which turns to blindness. His initial reaction is anger and frustration, which seems like the same reaction most people would have, but through the support of his parents, his coach, and friends, he perseveres and resumes playing football.

I did find it inspirational, and a good example of how to face adversity, but (and here's the part where I feel foolish) I thought it unrealistic for someone who is blind to play football. But then..... did I mention this is a TRUE story?....they showed the real Travis playing football! and I realized that we should not place limits on what others can do. The way that Travis overcame his affliction turned out to be very motivational to me and others...particularly considering that he graduated from a theological seminary and now has more of an opportunity to inspire others.

This is a story of twins, one of whom is adopted as a baby. The story focuses on Ryan Wade, the son of a preacher (Ray Liotta). Preacher Wade wants Ryan to follow in his footsteps, but Ryan has musical ambitions, and a great Elvis-like voice. He continues to pursue his dream, and eventually finds his identity, in more ways than one.

The main themes are being true to yourself and forgiveness. I was also impressed with how respectful Wade was toward his parents.

I found the story very entertaining, and attention-grabbing....I was eager to find out how it turned out and my patience was indeed rewarded with a very fitting and appropriate ending :)

This is the true story of Olympian and war hero Louis "Louie" Zamperini who, along with 2 fellow soldiers, survives a plane crash and 47 days in a raft, only to be captured by the Japanese during World War II. They are held in a prison camp run by a cruel commander they refer to as 'The Bird'. He is cruel to all, but he singles out Louie for punishment because of his notoriety as an Olympian. But the Bird can't break Louie.

Louie was a troubled kid who often got into trouble, and fights. That led to his joining the track team and, eventually, running in the Olympics.

Louie and the others are held for the duration of the war. The part that most surprised me is the lesson of forgiveness at the end, when Louie forgives his captors (the Bird won't meet with him).

A truly inspirational story about endurance, perseverance and forgiveness. To keep in mind that it is a true story makes it even more touching.

I especially like the filming techniques used in the story, such as the view from within the plane while shooting at enemy planes, and the view from a space below the blindfold when they are blindfolded.

Although there is violence and brutality, there is only an aappropriate amount to support the story, and there is little 'gore'. I would recommend this story of America's greatest generation.

Available on Netflix

This is a new portrayal of the Gospel of John. I reviewed the NIV version, but it is also available in the King James version and a Spanish version. Although many of us have heard or read most of the Gospel story, the story of Christ, I feel that seeing it told on screen somehow makes it more relevant, more real, to us.

The only aspect I am ambivalent about is that, although the story is taking place on screen, the whole story is told by a narrator. I would have preferred to hear the story through the dialogue. However, I do realize this would have made the story longer. It is 2 hours 40 minutes, and the narration allows them to tell more of the Gospel story in this time frame.

The narration also provides some additional description and explanation of the events on the screen.

An authentic and moving portrayal of the Gospel. I highly recommend it, as it will deepen your understanding of the Gospel. A great way to begin the Christmas season!

As was hinted at the end of part II, Katniss Everdeen is asked to be the 'Mockingjay', the face of the revolution against the tyrannical and corrupt Capitol. She agrees, with the condition that the victors of the Hunger Games will not be prosecuted. Katniss makes a couple of messages encoraging and motivating the revolution. I especially like the haunting tune they come up with to motivate the revolution; it is pretty cool. Even though Gale is helping her, Katniss is especially concerned about Peeta, who is being held by the Capitol.

Peeta is shown in several messages that are released by the Capitol, and one of the questions that is present throughout the story is where does Peeta stand?...is he still Peeta or has he been brainwashed?

I actually enjoyed Mockingjay more than the first two, because there was more emphasis on the story, than the action or fighting, although there is enough of those to support the story.

A well-written and well-acted story that you'll enjoy.
I am looking forward to Mockingjay part II.

I pray the Rosary daily, and I've heard the Sisters' beautiful music before, so I jumped at the opportunity to review this CD. And it exceeded my expectations.

After introducing each mystery, a sister reads the relevant bible passage. What distinguishes this Rosary recording from others, is that she cites the book and verse of the passage in case you wish to make note of it, or read further in the passage.

I especially like the echo-like sound affect that is used while reading the bible passage...it enhances it and makes it sound more powerful and biblical..

When you finish the rosary, you can enjoy a few beautiful hymns by the sisters....two in English, one in Latin.

The Rosary + the Sisters' beautiful singing = an awesome CD.

This is one of those recordings that I would classify as a spiritual aide...it will bring you closer to the Lord, and I can't recommend it highly enough.

This true story is mostly about Donna Lawrence and her husband Roy. Donna is attacked by a pit bull dog. The attack has long-lasting effects on her. A short time after that, Donna and her friend are walking and come upon a dog that was badly beaten and burned; ironically, it is a pit bull puppy.

Donna can't leave the puppy. She names her Susie and, against all odds, she raises the money to pay for Susie's medical care and recovery. Her friend Ramona is supportive, and her husband is at first reluctant...then very supportive. Together, Donna and Susie both recover and heal from their injuries.

Together, Donna and her husband seek justice for Susie both by seeing her attacker punished, and working to get 'Susie's Law' passed, which increased the penalty for animal cruelty or abuse..in my very own state of North Carolina :).

Special acting KUDO's to Burgess Jenkins, who played Roy Lawrence; I felt his acting was the most realistic and credible. His responses to various events in the story were very natural, instinctive and genuine.

I admit I love animals and I'm a sucker for an animal story, but this is a really heartwarming story that I proudly recommend.

“The Vatican Museums 3D” will be in theaters everywhere beginning December 10 in partnership with Fathom Events, and will be shown in 2D and RealD 3D. Additional shows will be in select theaters December 11 and 14.

The introduction begins with the paradox of art being a means of escaping the world, while at the same time, highlighting the beauty of the world.

For me, I am best able to appreciate art by hearing the story behind the art. A few of my favorites:

When The priest Laocoon opposed Minerva, she sent a giant serpent to strangle his two sons, and then him. This statue was the beginning of the Vatican Museums in 1504.

Da Vinci's 'Saint Jerome', while still unfinished, was used as a she maker's bench and was rediscovered two centuries later.

Did you know that Michaelangelo inscribed his signature on the Pieta, on the ribbon of the Blessed Mother's dress? I didn't...

There were several references to these works of art bringing us closer to God, and I do believe that is true. Whether you are seeking that, or if you are just someone who appreciates beautiful art, I strongly recommend that you see this movie. It will bring you closer to the art than you could get even by being there. The photography is outstanding, and brings the art to life.

address, Pope Francis described the family as the, "primary place for
education, the community of love and life in which every person learns to
relate to others and to the world." He continued, "All vocations make
their first steps in the family."

We Catholics
know this, deep down, but we have a tendency to deny the latter part of that
statement. Vocations are for other people’s kids, we tell ourselves, our
families aren’t perfect enough. We over-idealize those families who have
produced vocations to the priesthood and religious life. We place them on a
pedestal; imagining a large family filling the pew each morning at Daily Mass,
homeschooling in Latin, cheerfully doing farm chores all afternoon, then serenely
kneeling in the living room each evening for the family Rosary. These ideal
Domestic Churches have no loud arguments, no black sheep, and no doubts that their
children would serve the Church. Since our own families are not like those, we
reason that our children could not possibly have vocations to the religious
life.

Susie Lloyd, the best-selling Catholic
humorist, and homeschooling mother of her own large family, assures us that
these lofty images are accurate, some of the time. But there’s much more to
depth to families who produce vocations than we think, and in exploring their various
characteristics, we just might find our families have more in common with them than
we think.

In “Yes,
God!” LLoyd chronicles the childhood and vocation stories of nine men and women
religious, describing the details of their family which she believes brought
each of them to say “yes” to God’s call to religious life. Chapters are named
for the predominant strength which those religious and priests learned from
their families. There is “Yes to Strength”, “Yes to Duty”, “Yes to Generosity”.
No matter what the inherent strengths of a family, a vocation always begins
with a “yes” and a family which strived to serve God with their lives. Families
bring their particular gifts to their vocation whether their home was rural or
urban, athletic or artistic, rowdy, quiet, or just plain contentious!

These
families are not perfect. At times, Mrs. Lloyd points out; even the challenges
in the home were used by the Lord to help the future religious transform weakness
into virtue. This is true in the family of Sister Marie Jose de la Rosa S.C.C.
whose chapter is subtitled, “Yes to Spiritual Poverty”. Her father’s long term
unemployment and depression posed a daunting challenge for her mother who
worked to support and raise her children singlehandedly. For Mrs. Lloyd, it’s
not about perfection, number of children, or proximity to a Church building,
it’s about the attitude which engenders the person’s “yes” to God.

And the
attitude is not always universal. Sometimes a vocation comes as a surprise. One
of the funniest stories in the book involves Mrs. Lloyd’s inability to see the
great potential in a college friend, Fr Jeremy Paulin, OMV, now a Vocation
Director.

So it seems no one is off the hook when it
comes to raising Catholic children considering religious life, since no two
vocation-producing families are alike. Mrs. Lloyd’s characteristic humor keeps
the Catholic guilt light-hearted as she brings to light helpful habits which an
aspiring mother to a religious can implement in her Domestic Church. It’s a
lead by example book on Catholic parenting, and it will have you smiling at
both the strengths and faux pas of your own family as you read the captivating
stories.

Kirk is enjoying his sister's Christmas party, until he discovers how down his brother-in-law Christian has become on Christmas. Kirk goes and talks to Christian, and although Christian is a Christian (no pun intended), he cites all the nonsense anti-Christian theories that atheists and/or Satanists use. One by one, these fruitless arguments fall as Kirk responds to them. here are a couple of my favorite points:

Where are trees (as in a Christmas tree) in the Bible? In the Garden of Eden, for starters...God gave Adam and Eve a garden full of fruitful trees to eat from...He only forbade them from eating of one. When they disobeyed Him, it was not possible to put that fruit back on the tree, so Jesus, the new Adam, made things right by putting Himself on a tree...for us.

Christmas is a Pagan holiday...SANTA=SATAN...get it? :) After I stopped laughing, Kirk explained about the real St Nicholas and how he fought heresies promoted, ironically enough, by a Bishop named Arius that labelled Jesus as less than God. St. Nicholas fought these Arian heresies vigorously, and as a result, became popular with the people, and children in particular, to whom he was generous...the beginning of Christmas.

Basically, Kirk conveys the point that Jesus is the center of Christmas, and as such, we should joyfully celebrate it

An excellent movie that will get you in the mood for Christmas and help make it even more joyful!

A beautiful collection of 27 hymns, prayers and psalms from the Liturgy of the hours, sung by the Camaldolese Benedictine monks. It was recorded in their chapel in Big Sur, CA.

I used to pray the Liturgy of the Hours daily, but unfortunately I am not always able to do so due to my work hours. This album helps me with that. If you are not able to pray the Liturgy of the Hours, it is beautiful enough to listen to anytime for anyone who enjoys chant. One unique quality of this CD is that it uses both two and three part harmony, which makes it all the more beautiful. Two of the best tracks are the Magnigicat and the Our Father.

The album is chanted in English, which makes it easier to follow and to use it to pray the Liturgy of the Hours.

A very beautiful CD that will bring you closer to the Lord.

In the future, earth is becoming inhabitable, with dust storms happening, and crops gradually dying out. A group of NASA scientists set out to find another inhabitable place for earth's people. A gripping combination of science fiction, drama and intrigue.

The story was well-written. The acting was very good, with some well-known names: Matthew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway, Michael Caine, John Lithgow and Matt Damon.

The coolest part of the story, by far, is the element of time travel and existing in other dimensions. I won't spoil any details, but the travel to another galaxy takes years, which is different than the travel time in space.

It is a fairly long movie, close to 3 hours, and I look at in in thirds...the first third is good, introducing the characters and setting the basis for the story. The second third is tedious, and just when it was losing my interest, the final third advanced the story, and had the most exciting scenes. I enjoyed it, but I must admit I found the ending pretty vague and unsatisfying.

A good movie worth seeing.
Every morning she becomes reacquainted with her husband Ben (Colin Firth), and then meets with a doctor who is working with her to help her regain her memories. It is a very unique story plot. It is also a well-written mystery, always keeping you guessing as to whom she can trust: her husband, her doctor or her best friend.

This is a story about Glen Campbell. Filmed as a documentary, it details his struggle with alzheimer's disease, and highlights moments from his career.

I was particularly struck by the lengths his family has gone to to support him, both in his struggle with the disease, and the production of his final album and farewell road tour. It shows what a family should be. Although it is sad to watch the struggle, it is also uplifting to see how determined they are to overcome it. Both Glen and his family stay amazingly upbeat. I also enjoyed the many clips they show from his performances. It does get harder, as we see Glen increasingly affected by the disease.

One of his performances included 3 of his children, so I don't think he's going to be the last Campbell to be successful in the music industry :)

A very heartwarming and inspirational story that I heartily recommend.

Hank Palmer (Robert Downey Jr.) is a successful Chicago attorney. When his mother dies, He goes home to a small town in Indiana, and the family he has become estranged from. While he is still there, his father, Judge Joseph Parker, is accused of murder. Henry stays to defend him. Aside from the trial itself, the story focuses on their relationships. Downey and Duvall give Oscar worthy performances, and Vincent D'Onofrio is also very good as Hank's brother. The story highlights both the strength and fragility of family relationships, and the need for forgiveness.

I do recommend The Judge, but for adults, not children.
Content warnings include language, and a couple of crude moments (no nudity or sex scenes).

The best aspect of VIP is the tempo/rhythm/beat of the tracks. The whole CD is very contemporary, and it will especially appeal to young people. Even though I am only 'young at heart', it appeals to me :)

The thing I like best about VIP is that the songs are so relative...they almost felt like they were written to me, or about me, because I could relate so personally to them. I do wish there were more than 8 tracks. Although they convey our weaknesses and failings, they highlight God's saving grace. It is also motivational.

My favorite track is Indestructible....it encompasses so much....how we can lose our way and God finds us, how we are so weak and yet shielded by Him, we are invincible, how he is our strength, and He watches over us.

I highly recommend VIP...it is uplifting, entertaining and will help bring you closer to the Lord.
